The Present

Ancient Viking and Celtic Symbols | Mixed Media on Canvas

Every civilization carries two stories: the one written in history, and the one preserved in the spirit of its people.

The Vikings are often remembered through images of conquest, exploration, and conflict. Their longships crossed unknown seas, their warriors inspired fear across distant lands, and their mythology was filled with powerful gods and battles. Yet beyond the violence of their age existed another side of Viking culture—a profound connection to nature, community, craftsmanship, and the acceptance of life's uncertainty.

The Present explores this deeper legacy.

Inspired by Viking and Celtic symbolism, this painting reflects a culture shaped by harsh landscapes and demanding environments. In the far northern world, survival required resilience, honesty, cooperation, and a direct relationship with nature. Life was not separated from the natural world; it was lived alongside it.

The symbols within the composition echo this ancient worldview. They represent a people who understood that strength was not only found in conquest, but also in endurance—the ability to face storms, uncertainty, and hardship while remaining connected to one's roots.

The title The Present carries a deeper meaning. The Vikings lived with a strong awareness of the fragility of life. The past could not be changed, and the future could not be guaranteed. What remained was the present moment—the opportunity to live with courage, honour, and authenticity.

This philosophy can still be felt in modern Scandinavian culture: the appreciation of simplicity, the respect for nature, the value of equality, and the belief that a meaningful life does not require excess. Beneath the modern world exists an ancient memory—a connection to landscapes, traditions, and values shaped over centuries.

As part of my Art of Symbols collection, The Present does not seek to glorify the violence of Viking history. Instead, it looks beyond the battles to discover the human qualities that endured after the swords were put away.

Because every civilization is more than its conflicts.

The true legacy of a culture is found not only in what it conquered, but in what it carried forward.
