Evoke
Mixed Media on Canvas | 145 × 110 cm
Every civilization leaves behind more than monuments.
Long after temples collapse and empires fade, fragments of their stories continue to shape the people who follow. Evoke is a reflection on those invisible inheritances—the symbols, beliefs and aspirations that survive long after history itself has turned to dust.
The painting draws inspiration from the visual language of the ancient world, where stone reliefs, weathered sculptures and sacred symbols carried meanings far beyond decoration. These were not merely works of art; they were humanity's earliest attempts to preserve identity, wisdom and memory. Their surfaces have eroded, but their voices have not been silenced.
The title Evoke refers to the act of awakening something that has never entirely disappeared. We often believe that the past is behind us, yet much of who we are has been inherited from those who walked before us. Their myths became our stories. Their symbols became our languages. Their search for meaning became our own.
Within the textured layers of this composition, figures seem to emerge and disappear simultaneously, as though they exist between memory and archaeology. The bronze and copper pigments catch the light like aged metal or ancient stone, reinforcing the feeling that these forms have travelled across centuries before reaching the present.
My work has always explored the relationship between humanity and its forgotten roots. While modern society celebrates innovation, we rarely pause to consider how much of our identity rests upon the foundations laid by ancient cultures. Technology transforms the way we live, but it does not replace the timeless questions that every civilization has asked: Who are we? Why are we here? What wisdom is worth carrying forward?
Evoke invites us to see history not as a collection of distant events, but as a living presence. The past is never truly lost. It exists within our collective memory, waiting to be recognised whenever we encounter a symbol, a story, or a work of art that stirs something unexpectedly familiar.
Perhaps the oldest voices speak most clearly—not because they tell us what to think, but because they remind us what we have forgotten.
In my artistic journey, Evoke represents the enduring dialogue between the ancient and the modern. It is an invitation to look beyond the surface of history and rediscover the wisdom that continues to shape humanity beneath the noise of contemporary life.
