Stuck
Mixed Media on Canvas | 140 × 106 cm
There are prisons without walls.
Stuck is a meditation on the invisible structures we build within our own minds. The central figure appears trapped beneath a mass of dark forms, not by chains or physical barriers, but by thoughts that have grown heavier than reality itself. The burden is self-created, yet no less real.
Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung wrote that until we confront our shadow, we remain governed by the unconscious parts of ourselves. We blame circumstances, other people, or fate, while the true source of much of our suffering lies within. This painting explores that timeless idea. The figure is not buried by the world around him, but by the weight of his own unexamined fears, beliefs, memories and inner conflicts.
Throughout history, humanity has conquered oceans, crossed continents, and built extraordinary civilizations. Yet the greatest frontier has always remained the same: the human mind. Our imagination gives birth to art, science and love, but it also creates anxiety, resentment, attachment and illusion. Often, the obstacles that imprison us exist nowhere except in the stories we repeatedly tell ourselves.
The textured surfaces and symbolic forms surrounding the figure deliberately blur the boundary between the external and the internal. They could be rocks, shadows, forgotten myths, or fragments of thought. The ambiguity invites the viewer to recognise something deeply personal within the composition. We have all experienced moments when our own minds became our greatest obstacle.
Stuck is not a painting about despair. It is about awareness.
The moment we recognise that the prison was built from within, we also discover that its walls are not permanent. Jung believed that true freedom begins by embracing, rather than rejecting, our shadow. In that encounter lies transformation.
Within my artistic journey, this work continues my exploration of humanity's forgotten wisdom. Ancient philosophies consistently taught that liberation is not found through controlling the outer world, but through understanding the inner one. Long before psychology gave the shadow a name, myths, symbols and spiritual traditions pointed toward the same truth: the greatest battles are fought within ourselves.
Stuck invites the viewer to pause and ask a simple but profound question:
What if the heaviest burden I carry is one I unknowingly created?
